Abstract: The aim of this paper is to identify the key geographical regions responsible for increase particulate matter (PM10) levels in two cities (Bucharest, Eastern Europe; and Szeged, East-Central Europe). Backward trajectories (HYSPLIT model) are clustered using the Mahalanobis metric in order to determine which regions imply high PM10 concentrations. In this paper was analyzed daily mean PM10 data as well as daily meteorological data taken for both cities for a five years period (2004-2008).

Keywords: air quality, backward trajectories, meteorological data, PM10
