Abstract: Increasing motorization in recent years has led to life’s quality degradation in major cities by the appearance of the most irritating phenomenon of the modern world – traffic congestion. The paper defines the notion of congestion through the stakeholders involved in the transport system and it proposes solutions to limit and reduce its impact on city life. To limit congestion effects a default measure of development and use of urban public transport networks with high capacity it is proposed and analyzed. The theoretical assertions are supported by a case study on Bucharest’s subway network. It presents the network, the connectivity indices and the homogenity degree of the subway network for the current situation and also for the 2017 year when a new metro line will be put into operation - M5 metro line - Eroilor-Drumul Taberei. Conclusions are drawn on how the development of subway network was led and on the necessity of using public transport in daily trips.
