Abstract
Development of water transportation in Romania is favored by the existence of over 200-km of coastline along the Black Sea and about 1,300-km of inland waterways. This publication presents the main Romanian navigation infrastructure including the one related to the Danube River and the Port of Constanta and explains the importance of integration in a unified transportation system and for providing specialized services. The Danube is one of the most important inland waterways in Europe having a navigable length of 2,588-km of which 1,075-km run through Romania. To capitalize on this navigable potential were constructed over 30 port facilities which provide handling and storage of goods, and are part of an integrated transportation system. The Port of Constanta is constructed on the west coast of the Black Sea and when completed will have the capacity to receive vessels up to 250,000 dwt. The port is a major center of transportation, storage and distribution of goods and provides specialized services. With connections to railways, roads and airport facilities, it is accessible to all major suppliers of goods and consumer markets. Furthermore, the Black Sea is surrounded by six countries including Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Georgia, Turkey and Bulgaria. These countries have agreed to create zones of collaboration which will result in further development of the Romanian navigation infrastructure
