Abstract: The paper presents design and simulation of a high-power induction motor of 630 kW which has to fulfill some severe start-up constraints, that is a low starting current (Is/Ir<3.3) and a relatively high pull-up torque (Ts/Tr>1). The proposed solution uses two distinct rotor cages made of copper and conductive iron respectively. Additionally, the copper cage has a particular construction of the bars both inside the slots and at their extremities. The simulation of the operation uses a software package based on finite element method.

Keywords: high power induction motor, start-up constraints, two squirrel cages of distinct materials, FEM simulation
