Abstract: The development of the wastewater collection and treatment in Romania, as a result of the Adhesion Treaty, will lead to the production of higher and higher sludge quantities. Thus, an approximate increase of five times of the sludge quantity will result after treatment, by the year 2020, when all the localities over 2000 inhabitants should have sewerage networks and should be connected to a wastewater treatment plant which includes a sludge processing line. The treatment of the sludge is a necessity before being removed for storage or subsequent recovery. Purpose of treatment is to reduce or to eliminate potential decay and bad odours, as well to reduce the water content. The operators of the waste water treatment plants must identify the best environmental solutions and practices for the treatment, recovery/disposal of sludge, both sustainable and efficient in terms of costs
