Abstract: The beginnings of standardization in Romania fall within the international evolution in this field, dating back to the period preceding the Second World War. The end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century coincided with the formation of the Romanian national state, which led to an unprecedented economic development in our lands amid the technological explosion and the progress of science and technology worldwide. The first national standards were adopted between 1937-1938 at AGIR - the General Association of Engineers in Romania. The year 1998 coincided with a profound institutional reform: the National Standardization Body - the Romanian Institute for Standardization, becomes, based on the Government Ordinance no. 39/30 January 1998 (amended by GO No 44/27 July 1998) Romanian Standardization Association ASRO, private law association, non-profit, legal entity organized and operating on the basis of Law no. 21/1924. The paper analyzes Romanian standardization in the 20 years of operation of ASRO.
